Frank Bauer has rebuilt a Type 44 shift
linkage. In http://www.audifans.com/archives/1999/08/msg00183.html he
lists the parts he used and describes how at the same time he produced a
shorter-throw shifter lever. You might contact
him <frankbauer at thevine.net> about where in the linkage your problem
might be and how you might tackle it. We'd all be interested in what you
find out, too.
