sunroof motor

i haven't figured out how to align my sunroof with the motor connected to
the roof. what i ended up doing was removing the motor and using an allen
wrench in the little gear to turn the sunroof without the motor until it was
halfway open. i then put the motor back in and pushed the switch to open
the roof all the way. either one of two things happened: the sunroof
stopped, becuase the motor thought the roof was open all the way, in which
case i removed the motor and started cranking manually until the roof was
all the way open, or the sunroof opened all the way, in which case i removed
the motor and started cranking manually to close the roof part of the way so
that i could continue to use the motor to open the roof to the full open
position. Note, both involve some minor adjustment to make sure the roof
closes tightly.
on my motor, the little lever fits around a "C" shaped hook on the body
after it is removed from the roof. my sunroof jumped the chain or something
and got out of align and the little lever popped off under the stress. this
worked for awhile, but the chain is worn on mine and the roof slips off of
it often. i would love a primer on how to fix this problem.
oh, i have an 88 90Q, so it's probably close to yours, but i'm not sure if
it's exact.
good luck, bryan

Subject: sunroof motor question
Hi listers.
The motor assembly has a lever which engages/disengages the gear. How
is it kept in engage position? The gear housing has a boss with a deep
notch which looks like a place for the lever but to keep it in the notch
it need to be pressed and held against the housing. Someone before me
messed with the motor and it is out of adjustment (microswitches), with
missing screw and spacer. I am thinking: is it lever handle elevated
too much if it can not stay securely in the notch? When I opened the
cover with the dome light the lever was not in engage position and I
think it was the reason why sunroof did not operate and I heard
click-click.
Thank you.
