Sticky ignition switch

All of a sudden my '97 A6 Quattro ignition switch is sticky.  You have to 
manually turn the key back to stop the grinding of the starter.  Tricky part 
is to bring it back without keying the car off.  Anyone else in Audi land 
have similar problems?  I would appreciate any insight anyone may have to 
offer.
Another comment: The other day some "knuckledragger" in a 70's something 
rustbucket of a Tercel, accosted my wife with a verbal assault in the 
Wal-Mart parking zoo.  The only english she could translate was "hey lady 
It's only an Audi!" ..... Yeah ain't it!
