Starter Question - 88 80q

Well................
The battery should be checked for voltage, not AMPS. Unless you are using a
load tester. Applying a draw (AMPS) to your battery (via a load tester, or
car ACC) would tell you if the battery is recovering and holding its charge.
What I am suggesting is to test is your charging system, NOT YOUR BATTERY!

It is evident that your battery is holding up since you are starting OK in
the morning.

Take care,
Avi
BTW, I don't understand your "5AMP" and "12AMP" information, how did you
obtain it?

Avi,

I replaced the battery after checking across it with the car off. With the
old battery, got barely 5 amps. After starting with the old battery, got 12
amps. But overnight, it seemed to drain because when I tried starting in
the morning, I could hear the fuel pump just barely prime. Took a hell of a
lot of cranking to get it started. Bats at least 4 years old. Anyway,
after replcing it, got better results.

I'll check the belt tensions though. Thanks.

Hey buddy,
I am not sure it is either one...................
Before diving into the starter or?..................
Check and see if your charging voltage is correct............what might be
happening is, that your charging is very weak (but still charging) and as
you drive your battery runs out, hence the hard start. Over night the
battery recovers and start you up smoothly.
Check the voltage across the battery with the car running and check the belt
tension on the alt.

The above is some place to start.........

Good luck,
Avi

Subject: Starter Question - 88 80q

Follks,

Seems that I'm having problems with my starter, especially when the
temperatures are high. First thing in the morning, no problems starting.
After having driven maybe 20-30 minutes and then turning off and letting it
sit for a while (more than 5 minutes) and then trying to start, that's when
the problems start. If I turn the key, get a 'kchuuung...kchuuung' sound.
Have to turn the ignition maybe 2-3 times to start. After each kchuung,
I'll pause maybe 3-5 seconds, try again and then it'll start.

So, question is, I'm not sure if it's the starter or the ignition switch.
Any ideas how what to check? How easy/hard are the starter/ignition switch
to replace?

Any feedback appreciated.
