Manual Transmission Saabs require the gearshift to be in reverse rather
than neutral. And at least my earlier Saab (1975) didn't lock the
steering column at all!

Guess that's not a problem for an early Saab (No BTDT on current ones).
Also, pre-1969 cars didn't have steering column locks at all.
