The factory scan tools are expensive and hard to get.  There is a good
alternative: VAG-COM http://www.ross-tech.com
You can buy the adapter cable from them and download the software from
their web site.  It uses the COM port of a standard PC (or laptop) running
MS-Windoze.

I have not seen this, but it does seem like the instrument cluster is
on the blink (pun intended).
