I took a axle off an 85 4ks in a junkyard and about half of the bolts were
allen and about half were 12-pt. Both appeared to look the same and be of
the same quality/grade. I found that you can use a die grinder with a
cut-off wheel to remove the heads of the recalcitrant bolts. Once the axle
is removed there is enough left to grab with a pair of vice-grips, and the
usually come out easy as there is no tension on them once the axle shaft is
removed.

Lisle is the cheaper of the automotive tool brands, suitable for occasional
home use, not heavy-duty. AutoZone had a set of four 12-pt hardened tools
that don't attach directly to a socket, you an slip a 9/16" over the end,
or use a wrench. They work pretty well, as you can hammer them in if needed.
