4kstq project/5kcstq rack/clutch job begins

Just some ramblings about my projects...

Yesterday I began taking apart my donor 5kt to remove the motor for my
4kstq project. I also will be taking the steering rack out of it to replace
the leaking one in my '88 5kcstq.

I started labeling the wiring harness as I removed the connectors. The
driver side of the motor has pretty much had everything removed. I have
the passenger inner fender plastic removed, and have started taking
things off that side.

One of the next things to remove will be the airbox/fuel distributor. I
started pulling the injectors out, got 1 through 4 pulled. I can't find my
injector puller, so I used a couple regular screwdrivers. They came out
rather easily, considering how difficult that can be. The motor has
"only" 145k on it, I don't know if they are the original seals, but they
looked good. Number two was bright green, but number one was
darker, maybe just dirtier. There was crud build up outside that one.

I think it may be best to disconnect the fuel distributor from the head via
undoing the banjo bolts at the f.d. As I've seen in pics of other people's
projects.

I noticed the similarity of the timing reference sensor and engine rpm
sensor. Are these items interchangeable, if they are connected to the
correct plugs to the ecu? I know the plug ends of them are color coded,
but is the sensor end the same?

Also, I discovered that the knock sensor doesn't have a connector at the
sensor. It's just a wire going right into the end of the sensor, like an O2
sensor. There's no provision for letting the sensor swivel while the wire
stays fixed. That was new to me. AAMOF, I thought the control
pressure regulator was the knock sensor until I had to label the wires. I
didn't know what the knock sensor looked like until now. Interesting.

I was disconnecting the alternator when I ran out of daytime and
buttoned things up for now.

It was nice to start pulling things apart. It being a CA car made it
pleasant, with none of the fasteners being frozen or anything.

I put some pics up of the disassembled car. You can see them from
the Audi link at http://photos.yahoo.com/quattrophile

If there's anything I may be forgetting, or anything I should consider as I
move forward, I'd appreciate any heads up.

My flywheels are being turned, and I'm about to order the pilot bearing
puller. I should have the donor motor pulled next weekend, which will
get it out of the way so I can remove the donor rack. Then the 5kcstq
will be on the road again, and the 4kstq project will commence.

I think the 1-piece exhaust manifold on the donor is intact without
cracks! So, I may apply some treatments to it and install it in the
5kcstq to replace the cracked one. The 2-piece I bought will go onto
the donor motor, and into the 4kstq.

Later,

Ken
