Non-functional Climate Control

A friend at work has a '94 100CSQ, he got in it this morning and he had no
heat.  He actually had nothing, the display was completely blank.  He tells
me that there is a separate temperature in the dash and it too was
blank.  He checked the fuse and it appeared to be OK.
My Audi experience (and manuals) only covers the previous body style type 44.

Any suggestions?

If anybody has a thought could you please reply to my work email below as
well as the list since I can't access my personal email easily from work
he's a little anxious to get it fixed since winter has finally arrived to
the Northeast.
