For a discussion of Dot vs non-DOTapproved lines, check out the following.
So You Want Aftermarket Brake Lines...A Treatise by Andrew Warren

The following is an excerpt from the article...
"One important thing to note ... the "best" hose assemblies can't be DOT
approved - ..."
One concern with the stainless steel lines is they can be extremely
abrasive if they rub against something, acting like a file if they rub
against the steel line. This is another reason why a coating over the
braided steel could be desireable.
My recollection is the dealer price is about $60 apiece for the official
Audi replacement rubber hoses.
Aftermarket rubber hoses, at least some of them, are available for under
$10 at http://www.bimmerparts.com/ , probably other places too. These are
not identical to the Audi part, but appear to be very similar in
construction.
