Check oil level. If it's significantly low it will trigger the knock
sensor warning light.

I think he's referring to the "electric engine block" light :-)

It's flashing -possibly- because it is retarding timing etc.; it could
be
because the knock sensors aren't torqued properly or are defective, or
it
could be actual knocking under load. Michael, do you get any hesitation
or stumbling when this happens?

One quick possibility is to switch
to a higher grade gas at next fillup; 5000 turbos should run -fine- on
87, but maybe if you have a ton of carbon deposits etc or something, it
might start getting fussy. If it still flashes when you punch the
throttle, it might be the knock sensor needs to be re-torqued.

Are you on the up+up with normal maintenance items? Fuel and air
filters?
Plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor? If not, these should be looked
at anyway...I assume you're on the up+up with oil changes
too?(synthetic,
every 5k miles?)

How about engine mounts? I have a vauge recollection
that bad engine mounts can let the engine really rattle around and fake
out the knock sensors...don't just replace them on this, of course, but
inspect them; they're a regular failure item. Failure is characterized
by, among other things, leaking oil from the mount(they're oil filled.)
When my mechanic pulled both, one was covered in oil...

I'm not a 5000 expert anymore, so see what some other people say :-)
