It depends upon the car and paint color, IMHO. In some cases, it
looks really, really bad. In others, it drastically improves the
look.
For example, my father's '83 944 had a continuous gold pinstripe.
There was also a very small, body-colored door-ding-preventer-type
strip half-way up the side of the car
His "new" '87 does not...and its amazing what a stark difference it
makes. Both he and I prefer the older design and pinstripe; it helps
to break up the large flat areas on the car.
This is one of the reasons I really don't like the new A4's sides,
same with the allroad. The big flat sides of the car look hideous
with nothing to break it up with, at least to me :-)
