Overheating in an Snow/Ice Storm?!

Well on the way down to NY today I had to drive through some very poor
conditions, snow for 2 hours, then ice, then sleet, and finally rain. As I
got out of the ice portion of my drive I noticed my coolant temp gauge
running towards hot. On the highway in cold weather I usually see the
needle a full mark below the normal running point. So this troubled me a
bit, but I chalked it up to being behind a big truck for 10-15 minutes. I
cranked the heat and popped the sunroof. Temp dropped to normal running
mark, but still pumping the heat out. Pulled over expected some sort of
disaster like no coolant and a malfunctioning level sensors, or something
evil. When I glanced at the front of the car I instantly knew what was
going on. The ENTIRE front end was sealed solid by an inch thick layer of
ice, except for the one working light. When I cracked all this off and
cleaned the grille out I headed back out onto the highway. Bingo, running
down where it usually does, phew!

Just a note to anyone who runs hot in bad weather and expecting the
worst!
