The front and rear seals are designed to keep oil in - oil pressure gets
behind the lip and forces it down on the shaft. While it is possible for the
seals to leak oil prodigiously, they can leak air in more easily than leak
oil out, so you can have a rear seal leaking air in to break crankcase
vacuum while not leaking oil out.
It's a bit different with the front seal on the I5 - from what I recall,
that's sealing the oil pump.
