I thought that my turkey gobble in my old Coupe GT, was the shaft of
the water pump protruding too far beyond the pulley, and was rubbing
the timing belt cover.  I put a spacer behind the cover to get rid of it,
IIRC.

If that is not the specific cause of the noise, it could be the water pump
itself.  This has come up in the past, and is probably in the archives.  I
don't think it was known for sure, but the water pump was pretty likely
the noise.  Some speculated that the brand/type/country of origin of the
water pumps was a factor.
