NAC: online discussion groups

I'm seriously considering canceling my CompServe subscription--let's say my
opinion of CSi's customer service can't be printed in a family newspaper.
This leaves the question of what online resources would play the role that
CSi's forums now play for me. I'm vaguely aware that there are such things as
newsgroups, but I haven't really explored them. I understand that unlike CSi
forums, newsgroups aren't moderated, and the flame wars can be pretty bad, but
maybe this is the price I have to pay not to have to deal w/CSi's atrocious
customer service. Ideally, I'd prefer to be able to download posts into a news
reader or mail client--I think a Web browser is fine for some things, but v.
inefficient for this.
I have specific subject areas of interest in mind, but that's step 2. Step 1 is
to find what kinds of resources in general are out there. I'd especially like to
hear from listers who are (or have been) CSi subscribers and can give me an
overview of both CSi and other resources.
As I said, NAC, so please reply off-list. Thanks, and Merry Christmas!
