I have found that they rarely come out undamaged.  The ball joint rests
against the bolt and one or the other gets slightly chewed up.
Leaning on the official ball-joint removal tool (pipe) while inserting
the bolt minimises the damage on installation, but as soon as you
let the pipe go, it's the bolt that's stopping the ball joint
slipping further up into the housing.
