"Make sure you have comprehensive insurance on your auto policy, with a
maximum $100 deductible. Then wait until you have a stone chip in the
windshield, and have one of the glass specialty companies, who waive the
$100 deductible do it for you for free! This goes for any glass on the
vehicle, incl. headlights."
In California, and possibly other states, such a "kickback" is grounds for
suspension of your Bureau of Automotive Repair license, and is a criminal
act. Their offering (or your soliciting) the waiver of an insurance
deductible can be grounds for prosecution, so be careful. An old PCA buddy
heads up a program here in Southern CA that oversees body shop activities
for the Dept. of Consumer affairs and he says that's one of the things
they're coming down on right now. Sounds to me like another way the
insurance companies are getting to the consumer. They would rather nobody
get a discount if they can't have it for themselves. John
