headlight switch gremlin

Here is a little tip for all of you driving 4000's or similar cars
with the infamous rotary headlight switch. We all know how they love
to overheat and melt into a ball of goo, but tonight I discovered
another little "feature". last night, about 1 a.m. I was driving
home, and the dash lights went out. I figured that I could drive 45
miles without them, as I didn't want to work on anything in that cold
weather. So, I made it home without incident. but tonight, when I
traced the problem down, I found that not only did I have no
instrument lights, but no tails or markers either. Not a good way to
drive at night. When I pulled the switch out of the dash, the lights
work, in the dash, they go out. After a couple of minutes, I got
them to stay on with the swich in place, but it looks like I should
replace the switch, and probably the plug, if it's available. So, if
your dash lights go out, be sure to check that your exterior lights
are still functioning before you drive anywhere.. do as i say, not as
I did. Oh, and I still have an '89 200 Q in need of a new home if
anyone is interested.
