First thing you should check for is a vacuum leak somewhere.  Check
intake boot by pushing, pulling and turning to see if you get a reaction
out of the engine.  I had a hairline crack on the intake boot of the 5KS,
the crack was parallel to the worm clamp (impossible to see while
attached), found it by accident when the car missed just as I leaned on
the boot to check something else.
