As an interesting side note on intake leaks.
While in the throes of striving for higher boost, I once blew the end
off the intercooler on my '86 5kCSTQ. It wasn't immediately apparent
what had happened, just that the power went from -really- strong to
nothing ... and visions of all sorts of horrors danced through my mind.
After coasting to the side of the road, I was amazed to notice that the
engine was still running! And if I slowly gave it a little bit of
throttle, the revs would pick up ... throttle too quick would kill the
engine. Hit the key with my foot off the gas, and it would start again.
After an inspection under the hood - finding nothing amiss but the end
of the intercooler flopping in the breeze - I finally figured out that
the engine was running on the secondary fuel adjustment system. With
the IC apart the CIS wasn't doing anything (of course), but the O2 sensor
system was doing it's best to keep the mixture richened up to compensate
for all that unmetered air that was coming in!
By only moving the gas pedal very slowly, I was even able to drive the car
home in this condition.
