Intake boot leak result?

The other night I was on my way back to school when I came to a stop sign
and my car just quit and wouldn't start. I popped the hood and noticed the
passenger side hood lift had somehow worked its way off! Luckily I was only
3 miles away from home and my dad came to the rescue. Car would fire but not
run....thought it was maybe bad fuel filter or frozen lines (it was really
cold). I thought it had to have something to do with that lift...got to
feeling around on the boot and found a big hole where the lift had run
through! Took it off and fed it a healthy portion if duct tape and all is
well. :) So, a leak in the boot can even keep the car from starting.
