When I was at a local McDonald's ( I-80 and Rt46 - Ohio) I noticed a perrrrty
silver S8 sittin in the lot, and as I looked closer for radar detectors, phones
and the like (do not tamper signs! ;-) ), I noticed a huge mess of wires
inside! It had 15-20 wires coming through the rear deck above/behind the rear
seat (by highmount brakelight), and wires coming out from under the dash - all
going into a computer in the backseat with his keyboard and little LCD screen
mounted up front. It really looked like the inside of M.J.Fox's 'Back to the
Future" stainless DMC in there. So I waited with my kids in my car (they were
chompin on their fries and surpin down MY chocolate shake! oh well - this was
important!) and asked the driver what he was up to with this car.
In very broken English and with a heavy german accent, he said it had
changes that Audi would like to make for the 2002's (good thing I had taken
4yrs of German in H.S. too or else I'd have been clueless as to what he'd said
in English!). I asked what the wires were for, and he said for taking
instantaneous info and storing them on the computer in the trunk. He opened
it, and it tookdarn near all the space! He said he was able to make changes to
the engine and the suspension as he drove. He said he liked the US highways,
but disliked most of the state/secondary roads, though the countryside was nice
- Surprise surprise surprise, eh? Unfortunately, that is about all he said!
I had to leave and he did too. The car sounded great, too, but then I
haven't heard many big-engine import cars take off lately..
