Frankly, my '91 200 20v has needed a lot of "special care". Things I have
replaced that are specific to that car that cannot be issues on an urq:
afterrun pump (broke spilling coolant), UFO's, turbo bypass/overrun valve,
defrost flap spring (minor I know), knock sensors, throttle position sensor,
differential antenna setup and bose amplified speakers (took hours to figure
out how to put in an aftermarket radio). I liken the urq to a 4kq with a
simple turbocharger. The 4kq comparison would put the urq at the most
reliable end of the spectrum of Audi's I have owned. Of course the brakes on
the urq are slightly more complex and the turbo does add some complexity as
well as the wiring being somewhat of a problem, so that would push the urq
back to the middle of the reliability spectrum.
Then getting back to the original premise of taking a coupe and spending
$10k on it, it is totally obvious that buying an urq with a factory turbo
already in it makes 100% sense. Especially considering the quality of the
conversions I have seen. They can be prone to a lot of problems themselves.
The resale value of both cars may be a factor to consider. Then consider how
the cars look and drive. Maybe this guy likes the way his coupe looks and
drives. If so, he'll for sure like the way his urq would look and drive.
Definately not the same as a big heavy '91 200 tq.
All of this is conjecture on our part, as I'm guessing there was a typo in
the monetary amount and it may actually be $1000. Don't know tho...

Why would you bother with an ur-Q when 10k is a down payment on an S4 or
buy off for a 20v.
ur-Q is nice and all, but if the guy has to ask this question, he probably
isn't going to want to sink all those bucks on a car that will require
quite a bit of "special care" like the ur-Q does."
