(suttle?) signs my transmission is dying

The tranny in my CGT at 195k was essentially perfect in the 5 forward gears.
No whining at all, shifts were easy and smooth. Only problem was an
occasional grind going from 2nd to 3rd (maybe 1 in 10 shifts when driving
hard). Reverse had eroded to the point that it was not movable in reverse
(nothing but grinding and the car popping out of reverse immediately when
the clutch was let out). If your tranny shifts fine and just whines, it
maybe is just the throwout bearing going bad, or could be something worse
internal to the tranny.
