OK, here's a follow on question for you:
I'm close to getting a '98 A6Q Avant, pearl as a replacement for my beloved
91 90Q 20V which I just sold to another Audi maniac. But there seems to be
considerable disagreement about whether the '98 A6 Avant has the 30V or the
12V engine. The confusion lies in the fact that in 98 the A6 sedan was the
new body style in US, but the Avant was still the old body style. I've
asked dealers, searched on the web, and gotten both answers. Anyone want to
comment?

The Euro-spec is 192 hp DIN for all 2.8-30Vs, no matter which car it
rests. I would believe the US-spec is the same. The choises are: Passat,
A4, A6 (C4 & C5) and A8. The new 3.0-30V has 220 hp.
