I just had mine rebuilt (90a alt on the 87 5ktq) for 75$ and comes with a 1
year warrenty.

depends I suppose.  in order of cost/trouble... sort of -

new reg. brushes
new regulator
at least clean (machine...) rotor contacts
replace rotor contacts with new if worn down?
new bearings
new diode plate

don;t forget the stainless steel hardware...

and, yes, your alt should charge at idle.  is the belt good/new and
properly tensioned?
