4kq Differentials

I know this has been covered a million times, but I
can't find out how to check and see if the center diff
is locked on my '87 4kq. The archives tell how to
check the rear, and there is talk about what to do if
it is locked and I don't want it to be, but how can I
tell if it's locked. No matter what I do the light
stays on! The light used to never work, then one day I
was messing around with it, and the light came
on...but never went off! I've got a 500 mile trip
coming up and I'd rather not drive with it locked!!!
