You have hit the target dead on.  When at the autoshow, I actually sat
in, perused, etc. the Allroad and only realized that it wasn't "just"
another station wagon when I saw the window sticker.  Felt smaller inside
than the type 44 Avant.  It's also a bit of a physchological thing too,
the way the clusters and interiors are designed they make the interior
seem smaller than it actually is.  
I do disagree with the 911 comment though,  that is one comfortable car,
and the seat can be made to go back to basketball player lengths.
