Ocean freight is NOT the same in both directions.
If you have to get on line to wait, it will cost more. If there are empty
containers gong back, it will cost less. Price can vary by a factor of 2x
or even 3x depending on time of year, who you call, and evidently phase of
moon.
Example: China to west coast of US September thru early December, there is
NO capacitiy to spare - this is all Wal-Mart's stock coming in for
Christmas season. Rates are high. Going the other way is cheap - mostly
empty boxes. What we sell to the Chinese mostly delivers itself (Boeings).
Get youself a good freight forwarder (look for an "NVO", or "non vessel
operating" company) and he'll help you quite a bit.
That offer of free freight sounds unbeatable, though!
