Re: Mile markers in CA. On major interstates look along the side of the
road for white painted rectangles on the pavement. These are the
milemarkers used by the CHP in choppers and planes, aka "bear in the
air" to time your speed and thus have evidence of your speeding (which
I'm pretty sure we all do in CA) for the court (hint...the officer in
the place who did the clocking needs to appear in court too).
That said, there is an easier way to determine actual speed in 5ktqs
(and all other Audis with computers) if you do not trust the speedo. Go
to the "average speed" display on the computer. Hold a steady speed and
press reset. Continue to hold that steady speed and see a nice accurate
number displayed that will no doubt be different from your speedo
(probably slower if it is like most 5ktqs).
My speedo reads ~80 @3k RPM but is reality about 4-5mph fast based on
the above "calibration" method. Sounds like your 5ktq speedo reads fast
like most I have seen.
This was a thread we hashed out a few years back when a friend of mine's
'88 5ktq speedo said something like 90mph @3k RPM. Bottom line is keep
it in double digits and go smoothly with the flow and you will normally
be okay is my way of thinking ;-) HTH
