Flickering dash and temp control head lights on 1988 5kqt avant

I test drove a 1988 5kqt avant today.  Pretty good overall with a needed
timing belt and rear caliper.  Electronics all working, but the lights on
the temp control and apparently dash ( though I couldn't tell in day light.
Owner said it was the case though ) flicker from bright to almost off and
then back again while driving. Any common problems found with this by anyone
of you.   The auto temp worked fine, just the lights were flickering.
