Why is Europe so fond of diesels?

My wife loves them...she bought a new '80 200 D (bright yellow) wagon years ago
when we lived in Toronto. Took 2 light changes to get through most
intersections unless she had a running start. She traded it 2 months later.
Actually we have 3 diesels in the family all are easy to maintain great on
fuel but 2 are not what I'd call great highway vehicles.
My son upgraded before he left for Freiburg and traded his '88 Corsica in on a
'95 Jetta TDI. He likes it because I only have to fill the tank once a month.
I like it because he's away and it doesn't cost me a nickel. Fred's TDI club
has great amount of information on VW and other TDI brands but I forget the
website address.
