86 5kt dying...help!

I didn't have the idle instability you describe, but the hot restart 
problem in my '87 5ktq was the result of a split in the rotted rubber of 
one of the weirdly shaped hoses at the back of the engine buried under 
other plumbing.  New $60 hose (local robber Audi dealer) got me restarting 
normally.
