engine noise 1.8tq

Hello listers,

Maybe one of you has experienced this and can help me out. My wife has a
98 a4tq and at 2,900 to 3,100 rpm on cold ambient temp days, teens
farenheit or colder, she gets a whistle somewhat simular to a turbo
wastgate valve blowing. It's not the right pitch so it has me puzzled.
Not being familiar with this engine another thought was that it could be
a intake manifold solenoid for port switching. Again I don't even know
if this engine is designed with multiple porting. Dealer said this is
normal but gave no explanation. Any ideas?
