"Market research" I'm afraid. Much like our electoral process.

Ironically, back in the 70's & 80's, VW/Audi budged hard against American 
dealers (like my dad) who said, hey, you gotta have cruise, a good heater & 
a/c, tilt wheels, soft susp., etc. etc. This b/c dealers were losing sales 
to the Japanese makes who catered to (many) American tastes.

Damned if ya do...damned if ya don't.
