oil filters - NG vs. others

Anyone know why the 2.3 NG engine calls for a different oil filter than
the 2.2 or 2.1 n/a engines?  It's not even used on the NF 2.3!  They
cost more (about $10 vs. $4) and do look different inside, but *why*?

035 115 561 - NG (and I wonder where else?)
056 115 561 G - WE/KX/NF, and probably a zillion other places...
