to confirm that the erratic idle issue that i was encountering with the ur-q
was in fact, as suspected, a bad temperature switch, not the isv. thanks to
vag-com, i was able to see that the motronic thought that the temperature of
the engine was -20c. i have more than paid off the vag-com software by the
saving on not having to purchase an isv, which would otherwise have been the
obvious candidate for changing...

small complication arose when i told the chappie that i needed a new
"temperature sender". he produces a 4-pin switch. "umm, but the old one is
only 2-pins". the guy rings me back later and says that he is checking with
audi as there must have been a service bulletin produced to cover the
change. i (finally) go to the fa and find that there are 2 "temperature
senders" for the 20v - the one i want is called a "thermo switch (035 919
369m) " and is 2-pin, the "temperature sender" (034 919 369c) is for the
water manifold and is 4-pin. duh.

and the local audi shop traced the "clunk" coming from the rear which i
could swear was a bad koni to a bad ball joint. new ball joints all round.
and wheel bearings. and cv boots. not a job i'd like to do myself.

now, christine purrs. throttle shunt has gone, and the "clunk" from the
back disappeared. love that car...
