oil filters - NG vs. others

that's the "fits almost all VW's and Audis" filter.  The other is the
OC-85.

This is why I ask.  Klaus turned up this number for my car so I bought a
couple.  It's pretty easy to imagine that an awful lot of these NG's are
running the OC-47 or equiv, simply because it fits.  I checked FP out of
curiosity, and there it is, a different # for the filter.  I wonder if
your local place actually looked it up, or just handed you the OC-47
because it "fits" all the five cyl. engines?

Why, is what I want to know... with engines that can easily run 300,000
miles, "not having any problems" can be a *very* long term piece of
research!  I certainly wouldn't mind running the cheaper filters, but
I'd like to know what I am "giving up" by doing that.
