rearview mirror glue solvent

Yikes, the packaging for rear view mirror glue recommends gluing
another button on top of the old one, should this type of thing
happen. If it's on there good, I'd think twice before using
mechanical or temperature forces on it.
They must think highly of their product, because I used it to put my
mirror on, and it came off. Then, I did it again, taking care to get it
really clean and make sure to apply it correctly.
As I was trying to adjust the RV mirror after picking my 5kcstq
from the tint shop, last week, it came off in my hand with a slight
crisp "snap" or "crack" noise (no damage, just came off). Damn.
"Perhaps" one could put gentle pressure on the RV mirror at the
end of it's range of motion, and it may come off. But I am not
giving advise to do so! To the contrary, I recommend leaving it.
On my car, apparently the adhesive is sticking to the glass, and is
separating from the button. The button on my car is slightly
textured one the window mating surface, and seems like it's been
coated with some sort of ceramic over the metal. Is this normal?
When I bought the car, the PO had regular silicon "holding" the
mirror to the glass. It shook like crazy at idle and while driving.
I'm going to get some x-acto blades that are like scrapers, and try
to clean off the glass residue without damaging the surrounding tint.
I'm tempted to source a new, unadulterated button, to try again. I
dont know if it will make a difference.
Is there anyplace that sells metal RV mirror buttons, besides the
dealer?
Thanks,
Ken
