Audi wouldn't do this without a reason.  I think you have 
to go a bit deeper than just comparing the filters.  Maybe 
its to augment other related or subtle differences (example 
only...pans, pumps, pressure, lines, etc.).

I don't imagine they did this as a long-term field trial or 
operate on average margining and buy from two sources 
(dinto/mahle or whomever).
And we all know they wouldn't do this for entertainment 
purposes.
