Pounding the Starter

IME it also works if the brushes have just gotten to the point where they
are worn enough to not work.  A solid, yet gentle rap on the body of the
starter motor generally lets the brush springs push them out just a tad
more, giving you a few more starts out of the starter motor.  People are
ready to get down on their knees and worship you when you do this for them.
Same thing applies for fuel pumps inside the gastank.
