Chris,
I disagree strongly. Running _any_ older European car
can get to be a PITA. Are you saying that BMWs, M-Bs,
Volvos and Saabs don't have similar problems? Or are you
just saying that 5ktqs are just crappy?
My friend's Saab 9000 turbo was the biggest piece of
crap I've ever seen. Nothing worked on that car. The
climate control broke down repeatedly, the window switches
on that car didn't work, the interior was in much worse
shape than my 5ktq, the paint was in worse shape, etc.
Another friend's Volvo 850T is not much better. The interior
is not holding up too well ('94) and stuff like the blower
motor have already gone south on this car. Engine runs well,
though.
Another friend's BMW 635CSi has lots of stuff that needs
attention.
The difference between my friends and me is that I actually
fixed the problems with my 5ktq. It had lots of problems-
hydraulic pump, brake servo, radiator, a/c compressor, a/c
hoses, brakes, brake hoses, vacuum lines, wastegate hose,
sunroof, window regulators, window switches, the list goes on.
I fixed all of the problems. The car runs great now. My friends'
cars will only get worse, because they don't fix the problems
right away and eventually, they'll snowball to the point where
it's not worth even keeping. My friend w/ the Saab dumped his
car for $600 after letting the car deteriorate for quite a while.
He was convinced that the car was in great shape until the electrics
totally crapped out on him and left him stranded twice, got a
repair estimate of over $2k to get the job done right, paid a
few hundred to jury-rig the system long enough to sell the car.
