Heating Oil vs Diesel

I was working as a diesel mechanic in one of the taconite mines in northern
MN during one of the "energy crisis's" and we were using #4 & #5 heating fuel
in our diesel trucks (170 ton, 1600 HP trucks). Aside from being very
viscous at room temperature and worse as it got cold, the fuel would cloud up
and quickly turn into something resembling lard at - 30 F or colder. To
prevent this, we installed huge heat exchangers on each truck which heated
the fuel using the engine coolant - but even this couldn't keep 600 gallons
of fuel warm when it got really cold. We ended up using a product made by
Shell Oil called Aeroshell, I believe it was intended for aviation use. It
was a 16 oz can which treated 500+ gallons of fuel and completely eliminated
the jelling problem.
A side note - because of the "energy crisis" the company would occasional
provide 5 gallons of fuel to any poor employee who stopped to fuel up on the
way to work and found the station had run out of fuel. One day this happened
to me, so I put 5 gallons of this #5 fuel with the Aeroshell additive in my
Rabbit diesel. There was a very noticeable increase in power - almost like
it was supercharged. I drove nearly 300 miles with that 5 gallons of fuel.
The down side was it smoked like a coal locomotive but it started and ran
normally.
