It is HIGHLY unlikely somone swapped in an older motor into an 87 5ktq, more
likely its something simple like the intercooler to intake manifold hose is
cracked or there maybe a leak elsewhere in the charge path. Follow Scott
M's website for a checkout procedure of your motor, he has a check list of
things to check to figure out whats wrong....

Subject: considering a 5000cstq

Looking at buying an '87 5000cstq from a non-audi
dealer. It has been well maintained with suspension
upgrades, exhaust, new clutch, rebuilt turbo and the
engine has been rebuilt.
The price is very reasonable and the car hasn't been
in an accident. I've driven it and it runs and handles
ok but the power isn't what I would have expected. I
contacted Scott M about a ECU and wastegate upgrade.
My question is there anyway visible way of telling
which engine this is. I'm concerned someone may have
swapped the older 135 hp 5000 turbo engine. I have no
experience with the 5000 model. Thanks
