location of serial number on 5ktq engine

Mike,

There is another possibility for the car not haveing the right power even
thou it has the correct boost.

It could be a broken tooth on the flywheel starter ring gear. The ECU
counts the teeth to help with timing. Missing a tooth will cause the count
to be in error and the ECU goes to a full retard (I think!!) I know this
because my car is the same year/model as yours and while changing my clutch
in dec, i found a broken tooth. As i didnt have a flywheel to replace it
with, i had to put it back in. I will be replacing it in march i hope and
then my performance should come back up. I also have been able to compare
my car with my dads (stock 86 5ktq)in performance and he easily outruns me
in low rpm ranges, but once boost kicks in (i have a 1.8 bar spring/ecu mod)
i can catch him. I'm not sure how else you can detect this problem without
pulling the tranny and looking at the flywheel, perhaps someone here on the
list has that wisdom....

Rob

ps the parts for this arent expensive, its dropping the tranny thats the
hard part.

Subject: location of serial number on 5ktq engine

Received a few e-mails concerning my question as to
how do I tell which engine is in the '87 5000tq. All
said get the numbers off the engine and post them here
and someone should be able to tell me. I went back to
dealer late yesterday but it was closing time and
getting dark so I was rushed. I looked around the
engine and found no plate with the numbers on it. Can
someone give me a hint where it might be located? The
head had a number stamped on the side 035-103-373. The
wastegate was 035-145-705, manifold 034-133-233 and
that was pretty much it.
When I drove it boost was 1.3 and hit 1.4 once but the
engine feels weak for the 165 hp it is suppose to
have. The compression test that was done 2 days was
excellent, there are no vacuum or exhaust leaks which
is why I'm wondering if the older style engine had
been swapped. I went through Scott M site and searched
the audifans google archives looking for help without
much luck. Thanks
