[R] Sad day in motorsports

I read both of the articles posted in the LA times website, and it definatly
didnt make NASCAR seem like a very nice organization. Some of the things i
remember from the article were that the drivers in NASCAR would look around
at the beginning of the season at the other drivers and say to themselves
that 20% of them wouldnt be there in the end of the season.
HANS is something that NASCAR needs to take seriously, perhaps now they
will. As to the arguments it cuts down on visibility, well then perhaps
they will have to slow down a little and since everyone will have the same
drawbacks then the field will be even at any rate.

Just within the last week or so, Tim Winker had posted
the reference to the Los Angeles Times series that
addressed this very problem of neck injuries and
extensively rehashed the history of fatal crashes in
mant forms of motorsport. Unfortunately, NASCAR was
very slow to accept the possibility that the HANS
device could in some cases be a life saving element.
We all are sure that "it will never happen to us".
Unfortunately we aren't all always right. I have
often watched NASCAR and noted the skills that these
drivers had in the form of motorsport they chose. It
can be popular to denigrate the "roundy-round'ers" but
their set of skills to do what they do at 190 miles
per hour may not be the same as those of other forms
of motorsports they are just as highly developed as
that required of ralliests, F1 drivers, sports car
racers or any other form of the sport. It is an
extremely sad day when ANYONE pays such a price for
doing what they love.
