rear main seal R&R

As part of the "while I'm at it" on the tranny replacement job underway on
my 90q I want to replace the rear main seal.
I bought the seal from rod at TPC (comes with a funny looking plastic
"tool"), but I can't seem to easily remove the plate from the rear of the
engine?
There are 3 little tabs on it that look like you could pry on with a
screwdriver (I tried this without success). Should I use a gear puller to
remove the thing or should I just try to remove and install the seal with
the plate still attached to the engine? I removed all of the bolts on the
face of the plate plus the two bolts at the rear of the oil pan that look
like they screw into the seal flange.
Tips/Suggestions appreciated!
Thanks
