the dreaded Chinese Puzzle

Much to my dismay I accidentally knocked the bearing cage out of my LF CV
joint while manuvering the tranny out of the car. I read the bentley on how
to put the thing back together but even following the directions I wind up
with an assembly that doesn't rotate smoothly.. the inner cage will rotate
if I press on it but if I hold the axle shaft and try to move the outer
flange it doesn't budge very far.. definately put it together wrong.
I'm attempting to do this with the center section still c-clipped to the
shaft and then do the reverse of what bentley says: bring the outer flange
in at a 90 deg. angle and then rotate it into the home position instead of
taking the center section vertically into the outer flange and rotating. Is
there anything wrong with doing it this way? Am I stuck removing the center
section and assembling the bearing section THEN putting it back on the axle
shaft? Seems if I can put it together wrong I can put it together right..
Only two ways it will go together correct???? I swear I've tried both...
Thanks!
