Evening all. New to the list I'm just starting to restore the old '87 CGT
and have a couple of questions.
First, the engine has low km's (160,000) or about 100,000 miles. Compression
is excellent burns no oil but the lifters are noisy. Is it worth rebuilding
the head or will they start tapping again in a few months.
Well, I would advise you to replace the hydraulic lifters only. I have an 87 CGT. mine has the 2226cc KV engine and I replaced the hydraulic lifters at about 100 000miles. When I stopped using the car on a regular basis it had done 190 000 miles and still has good comp and uses no oil. Lifters are available from non dealer specialists and are quite cheap.
Also I went through your archives and read something about swapping in a big
valve head but I'm I bit confused with all the engine codes. Was that to fix
the lifter noise or for more power.
Big valve upgrade (uses Golf GTI Valves I think) are posible, however in my opinion you risk loosing the best feature of this engine which is its low down torque. Below 2200 rpm it has more than my 89urq (before the turbo starts to add to MP) It was this lazy easy loafing syle of power that i most liked with the car. Big valves and revised cam profile would give better BHP but maybe at the expense of low down torque.
Finally, what is the Family Album. Is that what you people call the Bentley
or is it something else.
No, its the VW/AUDI parts catalogue on CD (EKTA) easy to get hold of...
Regards Julian.
Thanks,
B Fletcher
